After taking second place in Miss USA and enjoying a lucrative modelling career, onscreen Halle Berry was at first treated as mere eye candy. However, having been cast as a crack addict by Spike Lee, won an Emmy and Golden Globe for her portrayal of Dorothy Dandridge, and then become the first black woman ever to win Best Actress at the Oscars, she's certainly earned a tad more respect than that.
