Atonement win 'amazing' Atonement win 'amazing'

10/02/2008

Despite only taking two of 14 possible Bafta gongs, Atonement producer Paul Webster was delighted by its Best Film win.

"It feels absolutely amazing," he said. "We didn't expect it anyway. It's been a long dark night of the soul, but we came through in the end.

"We got Best Film, so what.

"If we're going to win one it might as well be that."

Co-producer Tim Bevan added: "It was a very strong year. It's amazing to win Best Picture. There were many films to award this evening and they (Bafta) did. I'm looking forward to the Oscars if it's going to be shorter than this film ceremony," he said, referring to the fact that the big win for Atonement only came at the end of the ceremony after the film was beaten by other movies in so many categories.

Co-producer Eric Fellner added of the Best Film announcement: "When you are nominated 14 times and see 12 losses it's a great relief. Being nominated is an extraordinary thing. I'm incredibly happy to have 14 nominations and two wins."

Director Joe Wright said: "It's all down to Ian McEwan's spectacular novel. It's an extraordinary book."
