26th June 2008 - Tetbury, Gloucestershire

Tetbury woolsack race Tetbury Woolsack race
It is thought that the races originated in the 17th Century by young drovers showing off to local women by running up the hill carrying a woolsack. The race day has been going for over 30 years now with results entered in the Guinness book of Records.

6th July 2008 - London

6th July 2008 - London Doggett's Coat and Badge race
This annual race for newly qualified Thames Watermen and Lightermen was first contested in 1715 and is thought to be the oldest continuing sporting contest in the World. Before 1873, it was traditionally rowed against the tide, but is now rowed with the tide.

19th July 2008 - King's Lynn

19th July 2008 - King's Lynn World Snail Racing Championships
Snail racing is a fun event for young and old alike. For more than 25 years the World Snail Racing Championships have been held at Congham, near King's Lynn, in Norfolk.

26th June 2008 - Gloucestershire

Cheese rolling championships Cheese Rolling championships
As they have done for hundreds of years, young men and women hurl themselves down a hill that's so steep that it's impossible to remain standing. This is done in pursuit of a seven or eight pound wheel of locally made Double Gloucester cheese.

12th July 2008 - Witcham

World pea shooting championship World Pea Shooting Championship
Competition is fierce at the World Pea shooting Championships on Witcham's village green, where contestants shoot a pea through a tube, 12 feet towards a 12 inch target. Laser guided shooters are not unknown, taking the sport into the 21st century.

25th August 2008 - Llanwrtyd Wells

World bog snorkelling championships World Bog Snorkelling championships
Competitors have to complete two lengths of a 60 yard trench cut through the peat bog in the quickest time possible, wearing snorkels and flippers.

Don't forget the Doggets coat and badge race in London on 6th July. It's the oldest race in history.
