Do we still need a nuclear deterrent?

Do we still need a nuclear deterrent?
Billions of pounds could be spent on public services and helping hard-working people through the recession if the Government scrapped Trident and ID cards, a union leader will declare.

The country does not want or need the nuclear submarines or national ID scheme, according to Dave Prentis, general secretary of Unison.

He will say: "Trident costs £1.5 billion a year to run and a replacement will cost more than £40 billion. This is a criminal waste of money that the country clearly cannot afford."

Should Trident be scrapped?? What would be the consequences of scrapping Trident? Is Trident an expensive waste of the taxpayers money or does our country need a nuclear deterrent?

StuartRS says:
If others have nuclear weapons we need them too. Alas that thinking has led to a chain reaction of proliferation (9 owner nations now), arms racing that knows no limits or sense (60,000 warheads at the height of the Cold War), and weapons kept permanently ready for firing (before they can be destroyed on the ground by an enemy's surprise pre-emptive attack). Miracles have saved us from mistakes and madmen so far but we will not be able to avoid them being used for ever with growing numbers of weapons and owners. Deterrence - threatening overwhelming and indiscriminate nuclear slaughter and devastation - is not the answer to the existence of nuclear weapons: its a trap. Outlawing them globally is the only safe answer, as we have with biological weapons and chemical weapons. Obama and Medvedev have just promised it. Global Zero have just produced an action plan to achieve it by 2030. Replacing Trident will cost £76 billion. I would prefer to see Trident renewal put on hold for a year and for that year the UK government to put £1 billion and all its effort into getting negotiations for an international agreemeent to abolish nuclear weapons going really strongly. Prompt action now could save us £75 billion and global nuclear catastrophe.

I understand why some feel these weapons are a waste of time but I can not believe the naivity of those who suggest that we should set an example to the rogue states. What planet do they come from? If rouge states have access to nuclear weapons the only way to stop them using them is the fear of greater power, offering a free shot at the chin never works witha playgroung bully and wont work with terror states. As to the arguement that the USA has these weapons so we don't need them, well true to a point but do we really wish to reamin extricably linked to the Americans. I don't, their foreign policy lacks subtlty and they are more likely to start throwing these things around than we are.

Stuart Aken says:
In an age when rogue states like North Korea and Pakistahn have nuclear weapons and others, like Iran, want to develop them, Britain has a clear role as a democratic leader to lead by example and get rid of its nuclear deterrent. We can't afford it. We are a small island, part of a large group of other nations both with and without such weapons, and we no longer need this outdated and world-destroying technology. This is our opportunity to get rid of nuclear weapons once and for all.

Of course we still need to be a player on the table with the big boys. We have 16 live ones and these can however be reduced to 10 quickly. We have only the submarine based devices and none that can be fired from a plane or ground gun. When one considers that the U.K. has never been in a war situation when the U.K. has fired a nuclier device. Our submarines are a part of the UK's contribution to NATO.

The biggest threat to human life is Global Warming, and in order to reach the targets set for CO2 emissions we must adopt a Near-Zero CO2 Plan now. These are not cheap, with the exeption of mine which is self financing, and scarce money has to be gotten from somewhere. We can no longer afford to waste money on wars of any kind when we have important matters to attend to.

The Brits have always been a belligerent nation. Since the dawn of history England has been nothing but a bunch of War mongerer's! Through time, they have faught just about everybody, it's time this all stopped. You are NOT the self-appointed Policemen of the World! Plus look at all those peace-loving nations that surround you; Norway, Finland, Denmark, Sweden, Holland, Belgium, Luxemburg, Republic Of Ireland etc. - They do not have huge armed forces, let alone nuclear weapons, and nobody is attacking them! And to say that's because you have nuclear weapons is a total falacy.

It is imperative to keep the nucleur deterrent.
Our basic armed forces are getting smaller by the year.
A portion of our taxes should be allocated to Defence,
and SPENT on defence not wasted on other useless allocations.

If this country were to scrap these nuclear deterents, then we would be over run with idiots. What is that (idiot) union leader talking about. without that type of protection he would not be here let alone alive. He wants to be very thankful to the brave men and women who fought in the last war and every other war that this country has gone to. We need these machines of war to deter others from invading this country. If he has any objections, then why does he not go and live in Russia, I'm sure they would love to have him there, especially how they deal with objectors.
