Telectroscope

The telectroscope

Hardly anyone knows there is an unfinished tunnel running deep under the Atlantic, linking London with New York. This amazing feat of engineering was the brainchild of Alexander Stanhope St George and was started over a century ago.

The engineer's great-grandson, Paul St George, recently located the tunnel's location and discovered plans for an invention called the Telectroscope, a device designed to allow people on one of the world to see right through the tunnel to the other end. Alexander has now built a pair of Telectroscopes and is opening them to the public from 22 May to 15 June 2008.

This unique project is sponsored by Tiscali UK. Neal McCleave, Managing Director of Media Services at Tiscali says: "We are delighted to support Artichoke and Paul St George in this miraculous feat of silent communication. Tiscali strives to create a sense of adventure in the world of communications, and this project seemed to us to perfectly symbolise that same sense of adventure, being rooted in an age when engineering and technology were in their infancy."

I don't like to say it but just like Worthy, I really thought this was real at first!! Great idea and is it really only here for a few more days?

Worthy says:
This had me well and truly suckered in for about fifteen minutes, as the official Telectroscope site is so well put together. Only after going through the entire site did I realise that it's a piece of art, and a tongue in cheek wind up.
Hoax though it is, I'm still going to pay a visit to the London end of the scope in the next few days.
Best of luck to all those involved.

I unfortunatly have to agree with a few people on here and say it is a hoax. A good 'un though. It is another Spaghetti tree type thing. Wonderful idea though, and brings good connections to 2 sides of the world.

Yes, it probably uses webcams and broadband digital links. Perhaps pretending otherwise is not a good idea. While I can see that some people may be set thinking about how the system might or might not work, others may be left confused. It would be unfortunate if this resulted in any youngsters getting fundamentally wrong ideas about optics.

Stevie says:
This has got to be a practical joke! There is no way that tunnel has survived 100 years in the atlantic between London and New York. When the fault plates under the ocean smack in the middle of the Atlantic have moved considerably regular causing many earthquakes over that period. Damage to that tunnel would certainly have happened. More likely it is some sort of concealed screens at each end displaying 'webcam' images.

Please Please leave it forever....it's much better and more interesting than the Dome and at a fraction of the cost...A great tourist attraction both sides of the Pond.
