Should the Royal Mail be part-privatised?

Should the Royal Mail be part-privatised?
The Government has defended controversial plans to sell off part of the Royal Mail as a row blazed over dire warnings of the "severe" impact on pensions if part-privatisation does not go ahead.

The chairman of the Royal Mail's pension trustees, Jane Newell, said in a letter to Business Secretary Lord Mandelson that there would be "devastating consequences" if more investment was not found.

Should we sell off part of the Royal Mail? Will part-privatisation lead to an increase in price and a reduction in quality of service? Should it remain completely controlled by the government. Do you work for Royal Mail? What will be the effect of selling off part of the Royal Mail?

If recommendations from last year's Hooper report into the business were not implemented, including the sell-off plan, the pension fund deficit would be "significantly larger" than the previously quoted figure of £5.9 billion, she said.

Royal Mail staff have been warned they face having their pensions slashed unless part-privatisation plans went ahead.

The Communication Workers Union said the letter was deliberately leaked in a bid to "scare" opponents of privatisation as a growing number of Labour MPs lined up against the Government.

Ministers maintained that the letter was released to highlight the state of the Royal Mail's pensions deficit.

The Post Office started going downhill when the GPO was dis-banded. It have never been the same since.

This whole mess Royal Mail now finds itself up against was caused by the pension funds being mismanaged in the first place. Had it been invested properly the pension would be solid. Seems the management has never been as good as it should be (and it still isn't). With the right people in place the company could easily be turned around. Especially if they remove those Richard Heads that call themselves Postcom.

As a posty myself i would like to thank the few people posting on this topic. There's a few plums on here thinking that by privatising Royal Mail that everything will be sorted. Forget it. You'll get all the TNT, UK MAIL and any other company picking all the cities. All where the big money is. While Royal Mail will still be delivering to every corner of the country. Can you honestly see any other company delivering to the highlands of Scotland with maybe 1 letter for each farm. Cant see it somehow. As for the halfwit living at number 10 Downing St. How can you actuallty invest money in to Royal Mail but then tell their rivals that Royal Mail will deliver your mail for half the cost. Mail which Royal Mail had the contract for anyway. Its just idiotic. As for these people who are backing privatisation. Remember this. Once Royal Mail is gone, its gone. Then when you have to pick your mail up from a collection point in your town or city you may just realise how valuable your posty is. Not one posty is against modernisation or anything else. We just want a fair crack. We're out in all weathers trying to do a good job in each and every community.

Attention of Paul

I you are not happy with the service that Royal Mail affords you then please contact Customer Care via the Royal Mail website or contact your local Delivery Office Manager. This is not the forum for your personal gripes. After taking early retirement I have worked as a Postman for two years and see examples on a daily basis of Royal Mail staff making efforts above and beyond the call of duty to increase customer satisfaction. A common example is to correctly deliver mail despite the fact that mail is sent with incorrect/incomplete addresses etc....especially prevalent over the Christmas period. Do you really think that a privatised organisation is going to do this for you?? How many times have private couriers left packets on your doorstep in the rain? Royal Mail wouldn't do that!! So please follow the laid down complaints procedure if you're not happy and remember that its always easier to criticise than to be correct!!

They already started to dabble with the idea of part privatisation a long time ago when the Royal Mail split up the various parts of the business and other organisations allowed to take control ie the catering is in partnership with compass catering etc so in fairness they have already proved that a section of the royal mail can succesfuly be handed over to another company, I just think they are ready to roll out the programme out to the rest of the business .

Royal Mail for years now has provided a truley rubbish service; my mail for one is always having to be re-directed (by myself) - they should pay me to do this. If it hadn't been under government control it would be bankcrupt by now; I say privatise it and let it go to the wall. Sorry but I am sick of rip off Britain and us supporting government run businesses for sentimental reasons.

If Royal Mail had a level playing field they would be making money, what with the regulator screwing them to the floor and Roal Mail taking a 14 year pension holiday no wonder its going pear shaped. Mandelson and Brown should be shot they are so out of touch its unreal continually ignoring the wishes of the people in this country, next election can't come soon enough !!

royal mail is owned by the goverment therefore they are liable for the penison fund.this and the prevous goverment have blead royal mail dry for decades.on top off which gordon brown robbed the penison fund and now have the cheek to blame postmen/woman for being to inefficient or refusing to adapt to moderation which is totally untrue.and it was this goverment that opened up royal mail to unfare competition 2years earlier than any of our european partners and aloud other companys to dictate to royal mail as to what prices they where going to pay.they also appointed postcom who fined royal mail at any chance possible. all this from our caring goverment.dissappointed postie.

I am afraid that it has got to be part privatised in order to keep the organisation afloat, and the workers must accept the best of a bad job!, it also might bring in enough capital to help meet the pension deficit, another case surely of the top people keeping their eye on the financial ball?.
