Is Motherhood 'devastating' to your income?

Is Motherhood 'devastating' to your income?
Women suffer a "devastating" impact on their pay after having children, a new study has found.

Research for campaign group the Fawcett Society showed that childbirth marked the start of a "great divide" on earnings, which continued even after children left home.

Before becoming parents, men and women were equally likely to be employed but, after having children, 57% of mothers of under fives were in paid work, compared with 90% of fathers.

Mothers working full-time suffered a pay "penalty", while pregnant women were vulnerable to discrimination, according to the report.

Is Motherhood 'devastating' to your income? Have you had to sacrifice your career for your children? Have you had to make financial sacrifices to cope? Is there enough Government support for mothers?

Yes ROB, you and thousands of other [older] people like me did not realise that while we were working, people were being paid more not to work and it has not changed in the last 20 years.
I am a skilled engineer,2 kids, wife and 50hour week, Yes we got by on low wages but my Holiday pay had to go to pay bills ie; Council tax,Gas,Electric & Water rates all comming in at the same time then juggle the Mortgage.
Now I am 62 Kids grown up and gone,Wife working on low pay [Has to work now till 65] and I have been unemployed for 12 years without any benifits because I planned for the FUTURE, Kid's at School are paid £60 to stay on,I get £0-00p just pension credit.
Good luck to the people who can screw the system the FUTURE IS BARE, and to the MEN who are on their own at 50+ with a paid for house, charm a few girls to get pregnant to you, live with you and you will soon be well off on benifits.

Of course it has an economic effect; women are inevitably less productive in other ways if they are looking after kids (or fathers are, if parents choose the less tradiional approach). It annoys, almost angers, me when people say WE need to do more for mothers. Why WE, why not the mothers and fathers themselves? Why is it someone else's responsibility? It really angers me to hear people (idiots?) say "the government should pay". The government NEVER pays, it cannot pay, it is impossble; it hands out money taken from other people, it is other people's money, money THEY earned. Sadly we are becoming a nation of spongers and scroungers. How often do we hear "They" should do something or "the government" should do something? Rarely do we hear "I" should do something, it is my problem, I'll deal with it... people who think like that just get on and do it, without whingeing and scrounging. If you can't afford it go without, tough!
