Do you know how much everyday costs have gone up since Labour came to power in 1997? From the TV licence fee to a pint of milk, you might be surprised at the answers. Do you think the cost of everyday products have increased too much under Labour or is inflation what you would expect it to be?

Roger, you are right to consider whether or not the conservatives have anything else to sell off. An even more sinister strategy, as proposed by D.C. a few months ago, is for the conservatives to back a policy of selling homes to hard-working familes while the land owner retains title deed of the land. People will have mortgages on the home without owning the land. How bad is that?

DH lets not forget that the Torys also sold off all of the utility companies, Gas, Electric, Water, BT etc. etc. They made sure that their friends in the city done well out of the sell off. At least when they get back in again there is b*gg*r all for them to sell off, or is there?

Lots of good intelligent comments here but my view is simple.
All political party's p%ss in the same pot.
The conservatives have spent the last 11 years or so slating almost everything the labour party has done, but will they reverse anything when they get into power, i don't think so.
And labour are no better either.
Remember the Poll tax. My rates when from £100 to £800 per year almost over night. Labour was shouting from the highest soap box for months how wrong it was. Now, when labour got in power did your rates go back down, mine did'nt.
Labour or the conservatives are not at fault for the price rise in oil but you have to blame the torys for closing all the coal mines in the 80's. We are sat on over 100 years of coal reserves in the UK. And labour must be blamed for not investing in nuclear power.
As a result we buy coal/electricity at a high price from overseas.

The cost of "crude oil" has dropped recently, from $145 a barrel to, as of today,$102 a barrel, why have we not seen a reduction in pump prices comparible, and, the energy Cos. should in a month or so be able to reduce, (ha) energy costs!! what's the excuse I wonder?

Sue thank god that there is someone out there with some common sense. You are correct most of our financial problems have been caused by Thatcher's policies. She sold off all of the utilities to here cronies, they are now reaping the benefit we are paying the cost. The current crisis was casued by the American's. I do not believe that the Tory's would have done any better in the present circumstances they might have looked after their cronies better but who gives a s**t about them. My main complaint about Labour is that they should ensure that the utilities are run to benefit the customers with reasonable profits. They should inforce a windfall tax on excess profits. Ensure that some of the profits are used to create the infrastructure that is required to ensure cheaper energy costs. We have minimal oil & gas storage facilities in this country whereas the French have large facilities so there energy costs are lower they can smooth out the fluctuations of the market by buying in bulk whne prices are low. We have been screwed by the greed of those with the most who want even more. Why is there a third world 1. Greed of the Multi Nationals they have never paid a fair price for the raw materials except oil where OPEC have realised the negotiating strength that they have. Tea, Coffee, Coco etc have been purchased at a low price and sold at a high price for years. Whats the point in having billions its about time that the greedy b******d's learnt that you cant take it with you. This government should increase the tax burden on the well off because you can be sure that DC and his tribe will not!!!!!

I feel sorry for Labour who have inherited fall-out from Thatcher's free market policies. Today, people are asking the government to fund flood defences & to give gas/elec handouts. People should aim their protests to water & utility companies that have used profits to make big dividends to shareholders & C.E.O. bonuses. These companies should have held profits over for core re-investment projects. In Wales a few years ago, one water company was criticised for re-investing profits in HOTELS. If I was Prime Minister/Chancellor I would holt the practice of giving the banks first call on bankruptcy assets. This would make banks more careful about giving loans to companies seeking global expansion. When companies go bust, as a result of bankers & C.E.O. short term high risk decision making, it's the workers who suffer extreme financial loss long term in terms of reduced skills/career progression & insecure employment. I would put a ceiling on overtime so that companies are forced to recruit the necessary no: of workers for the operation without getting the job done on the cheap with a skeleton workforce doing two jobs for the price of one. I would make C.E.O. employment contracts out into the open so that everyone can see the protective terms they have set up for themselves when the firm they are supposedly guiding goes bust.

Arthur, if you wish to use that as an argument I would simply ask who was in power when we failed to either qualify or failed to reach the finals for both the World & European cup on countless occasions? I think that you will find that the Torys win hands down.

the problem is complacancy, people want some one else to complain, and not have to bother about the real problem , typical british mentallity. watch the french when there is a price hike they know how to complain, we should be a bit more forceful and maybe we would have less to pay for the basic things in life
