Should Sir Fred Goodwin hand back his pension?

Should Sir Fred Goodwin hand back his pension?
Former RBS executive Sir Fred 'the shred' Goodwin is in the middle of a row surrounding leaked details of his £693,000 a year pension.

Sir Fred Goodwin's refusal to give up any of his £693,000-a-year pension from troubled Royal Bank of Scotland has been branded "unacceptable" by City Minister Lord Myners.

Should Sir Fred hand back his pension? Is he right to keep hold of it? Is Sir Fred in the wrong for accepting it or is the treasury wrong for asking him to give it up, even though the deal was pre-agreed?

The former RBS chief executive rejected Government pressure to accept a reduction in his package, insisting that changes to the early retirement deal he negotiated when he was forced out in the autumn were "not warranted".

The massive payouts were branded "obscene" and "grotesque" by MPs, and Prime Minister Gordon Brown indicated that the Government was considering legal action to claw back all or part of the money.

But in a letter to Lord Myners, Sir Fred claimed the Treasury minister was aware of the details of his entitlement at the time of his departure.

Dodger says:
He has no intention of giving it up so bring in a windfall tax in the budget to grab most of it back.

Sir Fred Goodwin can legally hang on to his pension. That is the measure of it. Morally, it seems out of order, considering the RBS circumstances. But unless a legal clause is added to any public contract stating that productivity is tied directly to performance, there is no case to answer. Government and media references to such people as "fat cats" is puerile. Until we put legal injunctions in place to control company golden handshakes, personal pensions and bonuses, we must accept the consequences. If you or I were in Sir Fred's position, how much would we give back?

Nick Leeson brought down a bank and went to jail. Goodwin ruins a bank and is rewarded to the tune of £690,000 a year pension and not even near to retirement age.Something is sadly wrong somewhere.

Wake up England! The whole farago with Fred the shred is just to take your mind off the shambles Gordon/Alastair have made while saving the World. It is about time they thought about saving Britain and resigning.

Would you believe it a detailed probe is now being drawn up into Sir Fred Goodwin's 10 year stint in charge of bailed out Royal Bank of Scotland.

Lets start:-

December 2002 "Businessman of the Year", which describes him as original thinker with a fast forward frame of mind who had transformed RBS from nonentity into a global name.

December 2003 "European Banker of the Year"

This is the Best
June 2004 KNIGHTED IN THE QUEENS 2004 BIRTHDAY HONORS LIST, FOR HIS SERVICES TO BANKING. How do they pass the buck on that one.

July 2008 YES JULY 2008 awarded an honorary fellowship by the LONDON BUSINESS SCHOOL (wonder who the members are?)

2008 - 2009 Wrecks RBS and rewarded for failure.

IS IT ME OR WHAT!!!!

Atul Totally Agree.

Not content at totally ballsing up his retirement package they now have Lawyers on the case at £500 per hour trying to recover "Some" of his renumeration. What a waste!

Labour just a bunch of "FAILED MANAGERS" hanging on to whatever they can. In the eyes of the world this Government is a "JOKE".

theres no way you can take his pension back.He did that with the support of the treasury.all that this Labour govt is trying to do is look for a scapegoat for 11 years of failed policies.is there on thing that Labour got right .all they did was raise taxes and spend money wastefully.these columns are full of those who get hugh state handouts and would like to live well without working hard.Brown used the profits and the taxes he raised and wasted it all.sold all the gold.removed all banking regulation so that all could get easy mortgages and buy above their means and live in the delusion that he had made life better for them.Reality has come back to bite you.and now he refuses to beleive that his policies may have contributed to this.its all the americans fault.they sold us this.but gordon , you opened the way for UK banks to buy it.that is your fault.and if you cant see that then you are as culpable as fred goodwin.and those who vote Labour again also bear the blame.

You bet he should give back the money, or else face court action from this Government of ours. It is so wrong. People are loosing their jobs & homes because of Avarice such as his. I know people who've suffered from the recession. Why should he BENIFIT when others are loosing their livelyhood? It's time the people of this country put a stop to these greedy, selfish & Morally Bankrupt monsters!! If he won a legal battle, I'd expect the Chancelor to come up with an equally large Super Tax just for Green.

Simple really, Fred's not going to give it back,
Gordon not going to say sorry or resign.
And some silly people are daft enough to say it's our fault - berks.
I've done the one trhing that all RBS account holders should do - change banks, there's still a choice out there, who care's if RBS then go down the tubes. The government will also go down the tubes when we get our chance to vote!
