do people see the hobbit as a children's book? It's a challenging read, and none of the books on the list, with the exception of the Narnia book, can be considered in the same league. There are some really intelligent books for kids out there, His Dark Materials, by Phillip Pullman, the Lemony Snickett series, Inkheart, etc, where are these?

I'm surprised only one book from The Chronicles of Narnia made it into the top 20- but where is The Hobbit?

A lot of familiar books in the top 20 list, many of which my two daughters have read, so I don't consider them 'oldies' books, even though some of them have been around forever! Surprised that only one Potter book made it though:-( I try to keep my finger on the pulse when it comes to music - i've seen more bands than ever in recent years, and I have to say that there's some great music out there if you take the time to listen to it! I find some of the stuff I grew up with (late 60's & 70's) absolutely diabolical!

Liz Rose says:
I love The Green Knowe books by Lucy Boston and also Bogwoppit by Ursula Moray Williams. I think the list same generation problems as similar surveys on music which always have 60's and 70,s at the top. The older generation have fond memories but do not keep up past their generation.

To find out why there is a lampost shining and why the wardrobe is magic, read 'The Magician's Nephew' and all will be revealed...

Can't beleive that only one Harry Potter book was included they are all brilliant!
But have to admit The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe is my favourite a real magical book.

I have fond memories of the Lion, the Witch and the wardrobe, but I have to say that my all time favourite is Winnie the Poo, which only came forth.
