Binge drinking

Binge drinking

The government says women should drink no more than 2-3 units of alcohol a day, while the daily limit for men is 3-4 units, the equivalent of 1.5 pints of medium strength beer.

The Department of Health is spending 6 million pounds on its awareness campaign, and the Home Office will follow up with a 4 million pound campaign against binge-drinking next month.

Do you binge drink?
Is binge drinking a major problem in the UK?
Will the governments campaign make any difference?

Dodger, you are so right! stop the money to kids, and they cannot get alchohol. Also, gathering in the streets as they do, they should be "moved on" or even better sent home!

Dodger says:
I was a teenager in the fifties, we had under age drinking then and knives where carried, but we didnt see the drunkeness or killing that we see now. The only difference that I can see is that we did not have the money that kids have now. You couldn't get drunk as we couldn't afford to. We were also in fear of the old bill, if they caught you they walloped you. This access to money also provides easy pickings for muggers and thiefs. There was no point trying to rob someone that didn't have anything.

Phil says:
This extremely worrying the number people in their twenties an thirties with cirrhosis has rocketed. I don't think it is a government responsibility but individual. I used to play in a club band and have witnessed first hand the idiotic behaviour of binge drinkers. Binge drinking is dangerous. I think Jeremy Paxman summed it up rather well in his book The English. Anglo Saxons have historically been very bad with alcohol.

If it is illegal for under eighteens to buy alcohol, why is it legal for them to drink it in public? I always wondered why it was possible for TV crews to film teenagers drinking in public.

Squid says:
I get woken up at 3AM by the idiot two doors up who is smashing things up in his back garden and shouting abuse at a plastic chair. After the third occassion I phone the police because I know that if I go round to the house to complain again there will be bloodshed. The police come but because it's private property there is "nothing they can do about it" however I can phone the Council. " And by-the-way if you go round there again you might be in trouble yourself".

When I tell the police what I think of this seemingly perverse situation ("what a load of Bol"""") and they tell me that I will be arrested if I continue to use foul langauge!

In other words if you want justice and a decent night's sleep think smart. Resort to legal tactics as I did. Wait until the idot is asleep and then ring his front door bell for a few seconds. Shout in his letter box just to make sure he gets the message and then retire home. Repeat the same highly stupid, but extremely ammusing stunt, until the idiot cracks. If war and bloodshed follow it wasn't you who caused it was it officer?

In effect the law is supporting this idot's drinking habit. His human rights are clearly more important than mine yet at the same time the politicians are fighting to be first in telling us what they intend to do about it. I thought it was they who passed the same laws now perpetuating the problem.

Campaigns are not going to solve anything and if people like me feel we are unable to find justice in the system we will have no alternative but to lower ourselve's to the same level as the idiots. Anarchy will ensue and people will get hurt more often and harder. Maybee when the authorities have lost control they will make some laws that actually mean something and provide the stability that most of us in society seem to want. In the meantime let just get on with planning this summers riots. I hear it's going to be very hot in August.

Pete says:
The question is, why are kids drinking so much in the first place? The answer is simple, there's nothing else for them to do. When I was a kid, we had fun, playing sports, climbing trees, going to youth clubs and chasing girls up the high street. How times have changed. Instead of the government saying don't do it, they should be setting up centres and places for these kids to go.

how right is Rod?
answer very right!!!!!!

Rod says:
Government campaigns hardly ever work, it’s yet another massive waste of taxpayer’s money and the persons responsible for spending this money should be dismissed from government.
The law needs to come down hard on the parents of youngsters and the youngsters themselves who are buying alcohol, likewise any shop selling alcohol to under age people should be closed.
Any do-gooder who stands up to complain about peoples rights should simply be ignored. The do-gooders have run our country for far too long they need to keep their mouths shut and a much harder line needs to be taken for all our sakes.

The government campaign will make no difference.
alcopops that have no sharp vodka taste will appeal to kids
it's "big and clever to get drunk anyway" the habits they learn now will kill them in 30yrs.
It will only be cured when shops stop selling it to them and we as adults give the right messages about responsible drinking
