Hello Darling - The 10p tax rate

The abolition of the 10p tax

More than 40 MPs are said to have signed a motion, challenging Gordon Brown's decision to scrap the 10p income tax rate prompting Alistair Darling to meet Labour MPs in an attempt to avert defeat on the 10p tax rate.

MPs are furious that this change will leave lower earners worse off. Ex-minister Frank Field is urging the government to compensate anyone who has been affected by this tax change.

Have you been affected by this tax change, if so, what do you feel Labour should do to help low-earners?

Yes; Labour seems to be helping the rich get richer and the poor get poorer! Wasnt Labour meant to be in support of the working class originally? What a switch around!? But they did lose in the recent polls. Those who laugh last laugh the longest! Labour deserting those who 'put' you in power
will only cause you to regret it later.

Despite 11 years of this New Labour and still Blairite government being mis-guided by the hundreds of inexperienced and untrustworthy advisors/spin doctors at our expence, they're absolutely useless when it comes to managing anything. History dictates that Labour politicians can't do anything right, thats why they have to tell lies all the time. Taking away the 10p tax rate means that we lose another 2% of our gross earnings to the taxman which simply means 2p in the £ more tax.
We have all been betrayed by New Labour politicians and local Labour councillors and the fact that so many are still voting for these people who have betrayed us, is a terrible indictment upon what we are now.

as a single pensioner who's savings just exceed the level for pension credit i work just one day a week to allow me to maintain my home. i am now £12 plus a month worse of.if i had my time again i would not have bought a home or saved any money and i would have let the state keep me. i have paid tax allmy working life (46 years) NEVER claimed anything of the state and am being penalised once again.

I have not had an increase in real terms for the past 2 years. My housing benefit has recently been reduced by £5 per week because another 'quango' in their wisdom has decided that if you are a single person living alone you will only be entitled to an average rent for the area you live in. This applies whether like myself you have worked all your life or you have contributed little or nothing to the UK economy. Does this government know anything about fairness? I think not - they're too busy lining their own pockets!! Why can't they introduce 'windfall taxes' on big business - utility and oil companies in particular. No, they decide to hit the working poor instead.

I received a pension statement today. Hurrah! My gross monthly pension rose £17.45.
Booo! My Tax rose £14.50
Work out the complicated arithmetic and I gain £2.95, not £17.45.
I may be a pensioner, but my brain tells me something is rotten in the State of Blooming Britain.

I am 64 ,retired through ill health and my pension, which I has just been given a rise, is not that much in fact £7,202pa from my pension and benefit, and now the tax has gone from £13 to £27. I have always voted labour as my father did but never again.

As Chancellor, Brown introduced the 10p rate, telling the less well off they would gain from the cut. On becoming PM he doubles it and then tells the same people they will be better off. He's arguing against his own idea.

Les Blake says:
You don't need to be a genius to realise that if you take away the 10p tax bracket and make everybody pay the same 20p tax you have definitely achieved parity across the lower band tax range.

Any person that can do basic math can understand that if you raise the lower band of tax by doubling it you are certainly going affect the standard of living of the people in that bracket.

The "genius" that came up with this idea should be ashamed to call himself Prime Minister and should be booted out of the Labour Party.
