In October 2005 the institute of ideas launched the Battle of Ideas, an annual festival of social, political, scientific, academic and cultural discussion. We've chosen six of this years debates, allowing you to join in the discussion and submit your thoughts and views.

Can films change the world?
Can a film go beyond being a political statement to become a political force for change? Should filmmakers try to change the world, rather than merely reflecting it?
Should footballers be role models?
Should we look to footballers for moral guidance, or should we be satisfied that they lift our spirits with their sporting excellence?
Save the planet, don't see the world?
The Bishop of London has suggested that flying abroad for a holiday with no regard for the environmental consequences may be a sin. Should our desire to travel be limited in the interest of the environment?
An eye for an eye: What is punishment for?
Does the move towards 'victim-centered justice' mean more emphasis on personal vengeance, and if so can this be reconciled with impartial judgement?
The rise of 'Citizen journalism'
Where do editorial standards and judgement come from in the age of news blogs and camera phones, especially with mobile phone user's film footage appearing on the mainstream news?
Surveillance society: Protection from ourselves?
Should we oppose increased surveillance, or are we better off under the benevolent gaze of CCTV?

Community and discussion forums are a big part of what we offer, and we think the Battle of Ideas is a fantastic way to kick off intelligent and open debates about a wide range of subjects. We also hope we can continue some of those discussions online during and after the event.
