Terrorists cause tragedy in the United States.
What were the main events in the previous century that shaped the way we live today?

We've looked back over the past 100 years and compiled a list of events, inventions and social changes that may have affected the present and possibly the future.
 

2000

The worst drought in 100 years strikes India, affecting about 130 million people.

A trio of blind patients receive the world's first bionic eyes, comprising 3,500 microscopic solar cells which act to convert light into electrical impulses.
 

2001

On September 11th, two hijacked airliners crash into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, creating an explosion and fire that leads to the collapse of both towers. Moments later, a third airliner crashed into the Pentagon building in Washington, D.C., and another crash-landed near Pittsburgh, in what was revealed to be a coordinated terrorist attack on the USA. The terrorist network al Qaeda, is believed to have been responsible for the attacks.
 

2002

The UN food agency issued a warning that more than 38 million people in Africa are facing the prospect of famine.

The Odyssey probe found huge reservoirs of ice just beneath the surface of Mars.
 

2003

Supported by Britain and Span, the USA launched an invasion in Iraq to oust Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.
 

2004

Americans announce plans to colonise the Moon and land a man on Mars.

Ten new states join the European union.
 

2005

During the rush hour on July 7th, bombs were detonated in three crowded London subways and one bus. The suicide bombings killed 56 people including the bombers and injured another 700. It was the largest attack on Great Britain since World War II.

On September 25th, the IRA officially disarmed in front of independent weapons inspectors.

Bird flu spreads suddenly from Asia to Europe. Scientists estimate that as many as 150 million people could die in a few months.

Kyoto protocol on measures to control climate change comes into force.
 

2006

Saddam Hussein was hanged on December 29th.

North Korea finally detonated a nuclear weapon.
 

2007

Britain is hit by torrential rain, causing floods across most of the country.

England is now smoke free after lighting up in public places is banned from July 1st.

Police foil another terrorist attack in London, while car bombers fail in an attack on Glasgow Airport's terminal building after bursting into flames.
