What were the main events in the previous century that shaped the way we live today?

We've looked back over the past 100 years and compiled a list of events, inventions and social changes that may have affected the present and possibly the future.
 

1990

Nelson Mandela is released from prison after serving 27 years for his opposition to apartheid.

Space shuttle Discovery is launched, carrying the Hubble Space Telescope.

East and West Germany are united as one country for the first time since World War II.

Margaret Thatcher resigns and is succeeded by John Major.
 

1991

Slovenia and Croatia declare their independence from Yugoslavia, and are soon followed by Bosnia, Hercegovina, and Macedonia.

The United States and the Soviet Union agree to cut back long-range nuclear weapons by over 30% by 1999.
 

1992

The term "surfing the net" is coined by Jean Polly.
 

1993

Czechoslovakia splits into two new countries, the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

The bombing of the World Trade Center in New York City kills 6 people and injures over 1,000, escalating fear of terrorism on American soil.
 

1994

In South Africa, the first multiracial free elections see the election of Nelson Mandela to the presidency.

The channel tunnel opens between Britain and France.
 

1995

A new era of gaming is born when Sony release the Playstation videogame system.
 

1996

Protease inhibitors, a new kind of anti-viral drug, is found to dramatically reduce the levels of HIV in the blood of infected individuals.

First Digital Versatile Disc (DVD) players launched in Japan.
 

1997

The NASA probe Pathfinder lands on Mars.

Dolly the sheep is a clone of another living mammal.

On August 31, 1997, at 12:25 a.m., a Mercedes bearing Princess Diana, Dodi Fayed, their driver and bodyguard crashed into a concrete pillar in the Alma tunnel.
 

1998

El Nino, a large-scale periodic warming of the tropical Pacific Ocean, affects the world climate, upsetting normal weather patterns.

The internet population numbers between 30-60 million users and it is estimated that there are 5 million web sites.

India and Pakistan conduct independent underground nuclear tests.

Tiscali is founded by Renato Soro following the deregulation of the Italian telecommunications market.
 

1999

Sony create an intelligent robot called AIBO that looks and acts like a real dog.

Two teenage students kill 15 and wound 23 in Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado.
