Getting fruity with it

No start-up is free of problems, and Ernst admits that early mistakes can be costly. "Initially we bought a fifth-hand van from a farmer which kept breaking down. Then we rented cheap first floor premises near the market with an unreliable lift which would go wrong at 4 am when it's impossible to contact a technician."

The packers' unsociable hours, 4.30am to 8.30am means hiring staff can be a problem, while it's taken time for Ernst and de Castro to adjust to the culture of a small business. "We were both used to working with very professional driven people wanting to do the best possible job. In this environment people have different priorities, often with social problems which they bring into the workplace and we have to find ways of motivating them."

Fruitful Office now has 200 corporate customers including Virgin Active, Christie's and News International. "The London market is potentially huge but we want to set up centres in other cities as we're getting lots of enquiries. Our latest development is a fruit box which can be couriered throughout the UK."

Since they started other companies have followed. Ernst comments: "It proves the concept and helps to expand the market, but we want to remain as market leader by continuing to provide top quality and service."

Dos and don'ts

DO always negotiate with suppliers, and build relationships with them.

DON'T try to do everything yourself, if you don't delegate the business won't grow. It took us 15 months to hand over the most important task which is monitoring quality control. Every hour spent doing a job you could delegate is an hour lost in growing the business.
